Summer 2016

The Kutztown University field hockey team was

honored by the university’s Council of Trustees

for

earning the top grade point average among all Division II

programs. KU earned a GPA of 3.54 in the fall.The team was

originally recognized by the National Field Hockey Coaches

Association (NFHCA) in March as one of 27 schools in the

country to earn a National Academic Team Award.

Kutztown’s top GPA in Division II is its highest since

earning the No. 2 honor in 2011. Its last No. 1 honor came in

KU FIELD HOCKEY HOLDS HIGHEST GPA IN DIVISION II

2008. It is the 12th consecutive year that Kutztown has been

recognized with a Team Award.The National Academic Team

Award recognizes those institutions that achieved a minimum

Team GPA of 3.0 during the first semester of the 2015-16

academic year.

Kutztown also led Division II with six NFHCA Scholars

of Distinction (GPA of 3.90 or higher). Sixteen Golden Bears

held a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the fall se-

mester to be named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad.

Joshua Steinberg of Huntingdon Valley, Pa.,

won a Fulbright English Teaching

Assistantship (ETA) grant to travel to Germany for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Steinberg graduated from Kutztown University in December.The ETA program places

Fulbright Scholars in classrooms abroad to provide assistance to local English teachers.

Assistants in this program help teach the English language while serving as cultural

ambassadors for the United States.The age and academic level of their students vary

by country and range from kindergarten to university level. Steinberg has a bachelor’s

degree in philosophy and graduated summa cum laude. He is also pursuing a master’s

degree in philosophy with a teaching assistantship at Texas Tech University upon his

return from Germany.

KU DESIGNATED AN ALL STEINWAY SCHOOL

Kutztown University announced its designation as an All Steinway School in April.

The history, traditions and

designs of Steinway are found in concert halls all over the world. A university that is All Steinway has made a commitment to

excellence in musical teaching and performance. Kutztown University will join more than 150 schools worldwide and a dozen

Pennsylvania institutions of higher education with the All Steinway designation. Students at KU acquire a refined perception of

tone and performance in musical experiences with our Steinway pianos.

BARON HONORED BY AMERICAN RED CROSS

Kutztown University’s Ryan Baron of Garwood, N.J.,

was recognized by the

Tri-County American Red Cross as the recipient of this year’s award. Baron, a KU

football player, received the Good Samaritan Heroes Award for his heroic actions on

Monday, August 24, when he noticed a female student in medical distress outside of

Boehm Science Center. Having worked as an emergency medical technician during the

summer, he took immediate action, administering emergency medical care until University

Police and the local EMS team arrived.

In addition, due to his knowledge as an EMT, Baron made recommendations to the

university administration to enhance resources for similar incidents in the future.

For his actions, Baron received the KU President’s Citation earlier this year.
