NewVeterans Center to Support
Military-affiliated Students
K
utztownUniversity held the grand opening
ceremony for its newVeterans Center on
Thursday,April 3,with a public signing of
theArmedForces CommunityCovenant,which out-
lines six pillars of support formembers of themili-
tary, veterans and their families.
AARONREED ’17, aKU student and sergeant
in theArmyReserve,was themaster of ceremonies.
“We are here to honor all members of the armed
forces,”he said. “This is an opportunity to renew our
commitment as a university to all of the people who
have served our countrywith distinction.”
Dr. Javier Cevallos, state Sen. Judith Schwank,
Rep.GaryDay andKutztownmayor SandraGreen,
alongwith other state and local government officials,
and representatives from the armed forces and local
veterans organizations, signed the community cove-
nant, agreeing to pledge their support for KU service
members.KU is the first PASSHE institution to host
anArmedForces CommunityCovenant signing.
“Signing this covenant is an important step for-
ward for KU and the community,”Cevallos said. “It’s
a unique and exciting opportunity to support KU
servicemembers and lay out the actions KU and its
partners can do to supportmilitarymembers
on campus.”
At the center, student veterans andmilitary-
connected students can enjoy a computer station,
lounge, kitchenette,TV and additional amenities,
as well as receive assistance with theirGI Bill
and other benefits.The center is intended to be
a refuge – a place of respite from the demands
of classes.

RICHARDZILMER ’74 delivered the keynote
address for the event, and lauded the university
for opening the center.
“Seeing our veterans treatedwith thanks is
very heartwarming,”he said. “Themindset
toward veterans has changed remarkably over the
years.Your decision to open the center here is a
great step forward; I applaud you for doing this
andwish you the best of luck as you step forward
with this great undertaking.”
Zilmer was surprisedwith an appearance by
his son,whowas on hand to present his father
with a plaque from theKUOffice of Veterans
Services for his service.
To serve a growing audience of
mobile users, KU has launched
a new viewof itswebsite opti-
mized for smartphones.While
the desktop version of the site
remains unchanged, visitors
will now be served a separate
mobile design. The site does
not require any application to
be downloaded, so it’s easy
to access. Themobilewebsite
includes themajority of the
content of KU’smainwebsite.
It is the latest step in creating
amodern, highly functional
website targeted at serving
the various audiences who
visit, with a primary goal of
attracting new students to
Kutztown. Additionally, current
students can now use the new
MyKUmobile on their smart-
phones. More improvements
are planned for the future.
