MEd Multicultural Education Kutztown University has developed Master’s in Education degree program focusing on Multicultural Education. The proposed program is practitionerbased and designed to meet the needs of teachers who are engaged with increasingly diverse student populations in Kutztown’s service region. Students in the proposed program may choose from among three concentrations that align with education workforce needs: Equity in Education, Special Education, or Teaching English as a Second Language. The latter two concentrations have certification options. School districts in Kutztown’s immediate service region are reporting shortages of teachers with multicultural education competencies, particularly in the specialty areas of Teaching English as a Second Language and Special Education. No other system university offers a graduate program in Multicultural Education. West Chester’s master’s program in Transformative Education and Social Change does not have the same specialized focus as Kutztown’s program and is more theory- and research-based than practitioner-based. Kutztown’s proposed curriculum is designed to allow students to transfer up to nine credits of appropriate graduate-level coursework toward completion of their degree requirements. In this way, students have the option to tailor their program through graduatelevel courses offered at other PASSHE institutions. Among institutions outside the system, Immaculata University offers a program in Multicultural Education, but that program lacks options in Teaching English as a Second Language and Special Education. This has been supported by the CAOs and the Presidents and will move forward as a full proposal for approval and implementation.
