BSW Field Profiles 2020-21

BSW Sydney Shands 2020 Agency Name: IU13 Profile: The IU13 is an education service agency that works with 22 public school districts in Lancaster and Lebanon county. They work to implement programs that target student populations in need and "improve student learning and achievement". IU13 Employees are expected to embrace the agency's mission to "Provide services, supports, and solutions that make a difference to all learners and our community". Field Placement Responsibilities: I am working at the Fairland location in Manheim, Pennsylvania as a paraeducator in a special needs classroom. My classroom consists of 6 students, 4 males and 2 females, who suffer from a range of different cognitive disabilities. As a paraeductor, my role is to help support both the teachers and students in their learning experience. I monitor the children and provide educational and emotional support throughout the school day, as well as ensure safety, provide behavior management skills and conflict resolution interventions, initiate restraint procedures when there is a danger to self or others and help plan and implement activities. I also document the student's daily behaviors, interactions and educational progress all while utilizing trauma informed care. Future Goals: I hope to work with families, at school & in the home - to provide children & parents with the necessary tools to help develop well educated, supported, financially stable & resource rich communities.
