Commencement-Fall2021

D E C E M B E R SEVENTEENTH and EIGHTEENTH 2021 FALL COMMENCEMENT KUTZTOWN UNIVERSITY 1866

_______________________ Please be informed that all candidates for degrees, and all honors designated for degrees earned are determined according to the academic record that includes the student’s last semester, which ended yesterday. Since final examinations have just been completed, the final record of transcript is not yet determined. A student’s receipt of degree and the declaration of related honors must be confirmed and validated by the final transcript. In all cases, the actual awarding of a degree by the university is subject to verification by the Registrar. Time limitations associated with commencement make such verification before this ceremony impossible. Therefore, these exercises are to be considered as ceremonial only. A few of today’s candidates made more progress than they had anticipated, and finished the requirements for the degree after the commencement program went to print. Although their names do not appear in this program, they will be announced with those of their classmates. _______________________ The views or opinions expressed by the guest speakers are their own and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of Kutztown University. During the commencement ceremony, individual names will be read. In consideration of those who follow, please refrain from applauding until names have been read for all students receiving particular degrees. __________________________ Special thanks to the many KU faculty, staff and students who worked together to ensure the success of this special day for the December 2021 graduates.

In 2011, she earned her doctorate at Capella University with research focused on preservice art educators, professional identity construction and reflective practice. At KU, Hovanec inspires undergraduate and graduate art education students and general education students alike, and one of her major roles is supervising student teachers. She served as department chair from 2017 to 2020. Hovanec has presented on a range of topics at local, regional, state, and national conferences and facilitated many professional development workshops and seminars. In 2019, she was honored as the Outstanding Higher Education Art Educator Award recipient by the Pennsylvania Art Education Association. KAMAR BENNETT of Brooklyn, N.Y., graduates today with a Master of Education in secondary education. During his time at KU, Bennett worked and interned with Berks Nature and the Delaware Watershed Alliance. He educated the inner-city public, including adults, children and adolescents of Reading, on the effects of watershed. He also worked with the One World Program in partnership with Alvernia University. This program provides extraordinary opportunities for elementary students in urban areas. During the One World Program, Bennett educated students on animal habits and the effects of waste on the environment. Bennett hosted educational field trips through the Olivet Boys and Girls Club program, teaching students about environmental preservation and the importance of taking action within your community. Bennett graduated from Kutztown University in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in business administration. Bennett plans to spend time with his newborn son while seeking a full-time teaching position in science within an urban school district. His goal is to engage scholars in an interactive way that increases their understanding of the scientific world around them.

Speakers NANCY JEAN STUMP SEIGER ’54 is receiving an honorary doctor of pedagogy this morning. Her generosity and dedication to her alma mater – and the community at large – are transformative. Seiger graduated from Kutztown State Teachers College in 1954 with a degree in education. She taught fifth grade in the Reading School District for 32 years and taught citizenship classes at night. Giving back has always been important to Seiger, and Kutztown University is a better place because of her philanthropy. Her involvement in the Kutztown University Foundation's Ladies Tea led her to make a gift to name the Nancy Jean Stump Seiger '54 Multipurpose Room in the McFarland Student Union, a space that houses a wide variety of campus events. More recently, her generosity has allowed the university to begin plans for the Nancy Jean Stump Seiger '54 Botanical Research Center, another space that will benefit KU students, faculty and the local community. Seiger’s philanthropy is not limited to Kutztown University. Her generosity reaches to the Humane Society of Berks County, Berks Encore, Meals on Wheels and more. Additionally, she plans to establish a scholarship fund that will benefit both KU and Antietam High School students. JORDAN A. METZGER of Milford, Pa., graduates summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in communication studies and minors in case management and entrepreneurship. During her time at KU, Metzger served as an admissions tour guide and interned as a branding consultant at Lehigh Insurance Agency and Yutz-Merkle Insurance. She held jobs at Candy and Gift Cottage and Pike County Outfitters, where she cashiered. Her position as a tour guide, intern and cashier immersed her in different environments, where she gained a wide range of skills and experience. Metzger achieved the dean's list every semester and serves as a student representative on KU's Marketing and Communications Advisory Board. Metzger was inducted into the National Society of Leadership and Success and was elected as the event planner for Phi Sigma Sigma, where she planned events for the sorority. While at KU, she earned the role of Service Chair for Epsilon Sigma Alpha, for which she planned service events and created networks. Metzger competed in KU’s Business Idea Competition and was a finalist.

Honors Honors designations for the purposes of the commencement ceremony are determined according to the academic record exclusive of the last semester of attendance. Undergraduate students who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.40 or higher will be provided an honors medallion, and will also have the honors designated in this program. Undergraduate students who achieve the honors designation following the completion of the semester are recognized through a notation on the diploma and their official transcript. The following cumulative quality point averages must be earned to achieve graduation with honors: cum laude 3.40, magna cum laude 3.60 and summa cum laude 3.80. Latin, the medieval language of scholars, is still used on the commencement program to keep with tradition in designating honors. * CUM LAUDE — with honor ** MAGNA CUM LAUDE — with high honor *** SUMMA CUM LAUDE — with highest honor __________________________ A NOTE on ACADEMIC REGALIA Academic regalia worn at American college exercises today goes back in its essential features to the middle ages. The oldest universities of northern Europe, such as Paris and Oxford, grew out of church schools, hence they wore clerical garb largely borrowed from the monastic dress of their day. The head covering was developed out of the skullcap worn by the clergy in cold weather. In the universities this skullcap acquired a point on top that gradually evolved into a tassel. In this country it has been replaced by the familiar mortarboard, which still however, retains the medieval tassel. The gown worn today is the medieval roba and seems to have been borrowed from the habit of the Benedictine monks. Bachelors and masters could be distinguished by the simplicity or elaborateness of their gowns – the masters’ gowns were often furred – and this survives today in the ornamentation found on doctoral gowns. The wide velvet borders extending down the front of the doctoral gown, the velvet chevrons on the lined bell sleeves, and the borders of most hoods, are in the color of the scholarly field of the wearer. The hood (the medieval caputium) was originally worn over the head, and otherwise dropped onto the shoulders like a cowl. Master’s degree holders wear distinctively colored hoods that signify the wearer’s degree. The most common of these seen in the procession are: Arts, Letters and Humanities. ..........................
