6 TOWER | FALL 2018 SECONDARY EDUCATION MATHEMATICS PROGRAM RECOGNIZED NATIONALLY KU’s secondary education mathematics program has received national recognition from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). The NCTM mission statement advocates for high-quality mathematics teaching and learning for each and every student. NCTM reviewers determined that KU’s courses in mathematics content and pedagogy, as well as key assessments throughout the program, are rigorous and align with NCTM standards for preparing mathematics teacher candidates. The report also acknowledges the high rate of success by KU mathematics teacher candidates on key performance outcomes, such as their success on the standardized assessment measuring mathematics content knowledge. DOCTORATE DEGREES CONFERRED On May 11, six students received their Doctor of Social Work (DSW) degrees, the first in KU’s 152- year history. In partnership with Millersville University, the DSW program in Leadership and Education prepares leaders and educators for career advancement in agencies, govern- ment, and higher education. KUTZTOWN RECOGNIZED BY PRINCETON REVIEW AND U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT Kutztown University has yet again been acknowledged by two organizations highly respected for their ratings of colleges and universities in the country. U.S. News andWorld Report named KU a “Best Regional University” in its annual ranking of U.S. colleges and universities, and the Princeton Review featured KU as one of the “Best in the Northeast.” According to the data collected, U.S. News lists KU as number 137, which falls in the first tier of the Best Regional Universities for the northern region. KU has continued to rank in the first tier since 2011. Princeton Review’s Best Regional Universities ranks institutions that offer a full range of undergraduate degrees and some master’s degree programs but few, if any, doctoral degrees. A total of 644 universities are included in the Best Regional Universities rankings. The education services company is widely known for its test prep programs and college and graduate school guides.
