FALL 2018 | TOWER 5 The KU Council of Trustees has appointed new officers for the 2018–2020 academic years. Tom Heck has been appointed the chair of the trustees, Jim Ludlow has been appointed vice chair, and Dr. Jolynn L. Haney ’84, M ’93 has been appointed secretary. Heck, of Wyomissing, Pa., has been a member of the council since 2012, most recently serving as vice chair for the last two years. He is the owner of Heck Brothers, a full service florist serving Reading and the Berks County area for 111 years. Ludlow, of Fogelsville, Pa., has been a member of the council since 2013. He is currently president of Liquid Interactive, a digital marketing agency in Allentown. Haney, of Collegeville, Pa., has been a member of the council since 2016. A two-time KU alumna, she has worked in the behavioral healthcare field for more than 30 years. Each of the 14 Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education universities has an 11-member Council of Trustees, which carries out board policy and deals with a variety of local issues. KU OFFERS NEW DEGREES KU students can now earn a Bachelor of Science degree in two new majors at Kutztown University: public relations and social media theory and strategy. By combining coursework and hands-on training in writing, design and technique, the public relations program will prepare students to meet the workforce demand within a diverse array of fields, including social advocacy, media, marketing, corporate communications, and public administration. The program’s curriculum will include courses offered by the professional writing, communication studies, and social media theory and strategy majors, creating an interdisciplinary approach to prepare students for success in a varied, fast-paced and growing industry. Graduates of the social media theory and strategy program will be equipped with the skills needed for success, longevity and leadership in careers rooted in social media content development, FRYE NAMED RECIPIENT OF WIESENBERGER AWARD Dr. Lisa Frye ’90, M ’93 (center), professor and department chair of Computer Science and Information Technology, was presented with the Arthur and Isabel Wiesenberger Faculty Award on Aug. 24 by Alex Ogeka (left), executive director, KU Foundation, and Dr. Kenneth S. Hawkinson, KU president. The award is given annually to one faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding teaching skills and service to Kutztown University. Frye teaches courses in computer programming, web programming, practical networking and network programming, among others. Prior to teaching at KU, Frye was the university’s network server coordinator. She has been with KU for approximately 24 years. Frye holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from KU and a doctorate from Lehigh University. management, administration, marketing and analysis. Students will be able to apply social media knowledge to endeavors such as lead generation, public advocacy, digital marketing management, concept promotion, e-commerce, digital content marketing, pay per click (PPC) ad construction and evaluation, and content marketing.
