HIS WAY Ask Wells what he enjoys playing most after decades of performing music and he’ll have a hard time pinpointing one song in particular, but “Somewhere,” written by Leonard Bernstein comes up. And appropriately, “The Best of Everything,” performed by Johnny Mathis. In his car, Wells is almost certainly dialed into Sirius XM Radio Channel 71, the Frank Sinatra Songbook. Not surprisingly, “My Way,” strikes a chord with the musician. When he reflects on what he most loved about his time teaching at KU, Wells recalls the friendly and relaxed feeling from the faculty, the campus and the town itself; his students; their time together making music and supporting each other; and just enjoying life, calling it “an amazing journey to last a lifetime.” As for what the 82-year-old is looking forward to in the future, he said, “Music is a lifetime experience for me. I say you’re never too old to learn something new. I look forward to continuing my legacy as a musician, teacher and friend to those I come into contact with. I’d like to continue doing that.” BACK TO CLASS CONTINUED... Dr. RichardWells directs theKUAlumni Jazz Band during their 30th anniversary concert.
