Innovision Spring 2020

SPRING 2020 | 21 What are some of your daily responsibilities in your current position? Inmy current position, I am responsible for the accounting operations of my company. My daily responsibilities center around improving my company’s financial results and ensuring our current and future financial operations are set up for lasting success. To achieve these key objectives, I work with my team to create forecasts and budgets to help us accomplish long-term and short-term strategic goals. After completion of budgets and forecasts, monthly results are shared with our company’s board of directors, senior leadership and operational leaders to collaboratively track performance. Our collaboration helps drive changes that allow for significant improvements to our operating results and ultimately our financial position. Managing my company’s cash flow also falls within my areas of responsibility. What qualities do you think are the most important to succeed at your position? Critical thinking, attention to detail, adaptability, people management and analytical capabilities are important qualities necessary to succeed in my role. Establishing a comprehensive understanding of all functions of my company has been my primary focus considering my oversight of many areas. I must use critical thinking, attention to detail and analytical skills to discover patterns in data and come up with solutions to fix irregularities. I empower my team to complete projects and monitor their success. Implementing quality checks and status updates has helped us stay on track with key project goals while allowing me to maintain a broad view of our company. What have you learned on the job that you necessarily wouldn’t in the classroom? Building a successful team requires helping team members identify their unique strengths and areas of opportunity. I learned that aligning team members’ tasks to their skill sets helps them achieve their best work, which ultimately improves our team and overall company performance. What led you into your field? What about it motivates and inspires you? I was first exposed to accounting during career day while in high school. After learning more about accounting, I was interested in enrolling in an entry-level accounting course offered during my junior year. After getting a better understanding of how the operations of a company are related to their financial performance, I became excited about pursuing a career in accounting. Each day, I continue to be motivated by the satisfaction I receive knowing the critical role I play in my organization. Can you briefly describe your career path from being a student at KU up until now? While at Kutztown, I attended various Accounting Club events including the annual Meet the Firms Night, Golf Outing, and year- end banquet, which allowed me to network with alumni. From these encounters, the many opportunities outside of traditional finance became apparent to me. Following graduation, I began working at a large mutual fund company. In this role, I was challenged to use the knowledge I learned frommy Investment Portfolio Management and Applied Investment Management courses. Initially, I wanted to become a CFA and work with a stock portfolio. After completing my CPA exam study prep, my interest in traditional accounting surfaced. I then went on to spend the next five years of my career at a large regional accounting firm working as a senior auditor. As a senior auditor, I gained valuable experience working with clients in different industries and helping them solve complex accounting matters. From this job, I moved to working in the finance department of a large multinational company and then to my current employer, FSSolutions. What advice would you offer an undergraduate getting ready to enter the workforce? In school, we are typically taught technical skills and our curriculum is not geared toward other skills necessary to be successful in the workforce. I have learned that mastering time management, people management and communication skills are equally as important as learning technical skills. WAYNE MOSLEY ‘10 Wayne Mosley is a Corporate Controller for FSSolutions: a Third-Party Administrator that provides many services to assist in the management of workforce screening and addiction compliance monitoring.
