10 | INNOVISION MAGAZINE RECOGNITION COSMA LEGACY AWARD Dr. Frederick Garman, Professor Emeritus of Sport Management, was inducted into the 2020 Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA) Hall of Fame. In February 2020, at the COSMA conference held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Garman was the recipient of the Legacy Award. He was nominated by Dr. Soojin Kim andDr. Youngjae Kim and selected by COSMA boardmembers for his significant contribution in the sport management field. With over 30 years of experience in higher education, Dr. Garman retired in June 2019. Throughout his years of service at Kutztown University, he demonstrated an ongoing ability to effectively promote student learning within the disciplines of Sport Management. Concurrent with his successful teaching, he had pursued a scholarly agenda that resulted in numerous publications, including, but not limited to, writing in refereed, professional journals and authoring several textbooks, including Sport and Recreation Operations: Experiential Learning in Sport Management . He has not only contributed significantly to the body of knowledge in his research field, but more importantly expanded the reputation of KU in international and national environments. In addition, within KU as a result of his efforts and passion for teaching, his course, Event and Facility Management, has been consistently found to be one of the most helpful and practical courses in the major. As the Chair of the department of Sport Management & Leadership Studies, Dr. Garman pioneered the concept and led the department in successfully establishing a sport management program at Kutztown University. He assumed a number of administrative positions, serving as the department chair and also the College of Education Associate Dean. He took the initiative in pursuing COSMA accreditation and was also instrumental in successfully obtaining accreditation in 2014. In addition, he was active in efforts to improve the sport management program and dedicated his professional service and acted as chair for the COSMA site visit team. STATE SYSTEM STARTUP CHALLENGE Shayla Scallorn, the winner of the 2019 KU Big Idea Competition, represented KU at the 2020 State System Startup Challenge, an opportunity for students to compete for prize money up to $10,000 for their innovative ideas. Shayla placed 4th and won $1,000. A total of 85 students statewide submitted ideas, and five advanced to the final round, which was conducted using Zoom due to COVID-19. For the competition, Shayla presented her business, Anthology Marketing Studio (AMS), a digital agency for artists who want to make a living creating. Her goal is to simplify the marketing process for clients in fields such as fine art and photography. Tailored services include website copywriting, content planning, brand development and sales funnel strategy.
