Next, a category is selected, which could range from topics in sports to big cities. Players have two minutes to create a picture from that starting line and give it a caption. When the time is up, a judge will choose the card they like the most, and the creator of that card is named the winner of the round. What makes the game unique is that anyone can win. “Starting Lines” is engaging for both children and adults. Adam says, “We wanted to create a game that all different families can play together. Not one where adults mindlessly move across a board based on a spinner or where younger kids can’t keep up with strategy.” Meghan loves how children can be even more creative than adults and find a way to steal the victory. “Starting Lines” is not just a game strictly for when adults and children are together. Adults can have their own fun being creative with categories such as, “College Party,” “Back in the Day” and more mature categories with the adult expansion pack. The Owenz’s were inspired to address the “Creative Crisis”, a situation where the decline in childhood creativity has been going on since the 1990s (researched by Dr. Kyung Hee Kim.) Meghan, a psychologist, has been studying the situation and believes that “creativity is the one thing that cannot be outsourced.” She mentions how the duo wanted to put a stop to the steady decrease. Society is losing something that can be extremely valuable in life. Meghan says, “Creativity is a stronger predictor of unique accomplishments than IQ.”
