Innovision Fall 2018

34 | INNOVISION MAGAZINE “It’s cool to see how the automatic systems work. We got to see a situation where the automation system couldn’t process the packages or the boxes had to be broken down so human interaction was needed,” Shauna said. Typically, the club only goes on one trip per semester, but now, they are going on two because Dr. Chao is combining it with one of his classes. Only classes that are specific to the minor are eligible to go. Besides the warehouse trips, the club hosts guest speakers allowing for question and answer sessions to help students expand their knowledge about Supply Chain Management and Logistics. These events as well as assistance from Dr. Chao have led to job opportunities and internships for students. Club President Shauna Carty got a part-time position at the GHOWarehouse for a winter semester and a full-time position for a spring semester. Shauna said, “While I was working at the warehouse during my spring semester, I was just learning the basics.Because I learned the basics before taking certain classes here, the extra knowledge really helped me in my classes.” CLUB FEATURE SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT CLUB The Supply Chain Management Club is run under the guidance of Dr. Gary Chao. The club provides students who are interested in Supply Chain Management and Logistics with the opportunity to meet with other interested students and supply chain professors. “Our mission is to gain knowledge of supply chain and develop networking. This club is huge in networking especially with our trips to warehouses and to see guest speakers. Dr. Chao also networks for us. He tries to get students jobs whether they be full-time, part- time or an internship,” Supply Chain Management Club President, Shauna Carty, said. The club offers its members opportunities to learn from supply chain professionals in the industry by going on group trips to various warehouses in the Berks and Lehigh Valley area, such as Home Depot and NFI. “Dr. Chao has a lot of contacts within the area. He knows KU alumni who work at warehouses and a lot of warehouse managers. So, he sets up a lot of events for us,” said Shauna. On the warehouse tours, the club meets important officials working in the warehouse, such as store operation managers. During the trip to Home Depot, the students learned about the different stations such as the packaging and distribution systems. “Our mission is to gain knowledge of supply chain and develop networking.” L to R: Shauna Carty, Tyler Valovcin, Dr. Gary Chao.
