Innovision Fall 2018

30 | INNOVISION MAGAZINE STUDENT INTERN How did you find yourself at this position for your internship? I was looking for a second internship to be able to get some experience before I graduate in December. I had some previous involvement with the Career Development Center through the student government board. So I reached out and they were happy to take me for the marketing internship. What were some challenges you faced when starting your internship? When I started at the career development center, I wasn’t really good with designing, but they were able to give me the tools and resources to be able to teach myself, which later on I was able to catch onto. What did you learn from KU that made you feel the most prepared for your internship? I would say that the faculty teaches and prepares you for the working world. But I think the biggest contribution other than the classes, advisors and faculty, is the involvement and working with people. I feel like the more I’m involved on campus, the more I was comfortable talking to the people and doing things. What do you think are the most important qualities for someone to excel in this role? You want to be able to have the mindset of wanting to learn because in this position there were a few things that I didn’t know. An individual who likes to do and learn about new things, is definitely going to need those kinds of traits to succeed in this path. There are going to be a lot of things you don’t know. What is something you learned on the job that you wouldn’t have learned in the classroom? I would say designing and coming up with actual marketing campaigns, social campaigns and editing videos—which are things that I realized marketing is very heavily into. That’s one thing I learned a lot about in my internship. The actual designing factor that comes from marketing and advertisement. What is one thing you didn’t expect? The freedom of being able to do the assignments. The previous internship I was in was very strict on how to do a project and how to get things done. So, when I came to this internship it was very free flowing like, here’s a project, do it, and show us what you have. If we need to fix something, we’ll fix something; if there’s anything new we want to add on, we can add onto it. What are your plans for the future? I come from a huge military family and I hope to go in the Air Force in their officer program. If I don’t go with that, I do see myself working at a marketing firm. I want to work in the Philadelphia area because I just love the city. So I am hoping to work with a marketing firm or hopefully something in sales. Name a memorable moment that happened during your experience. I would definitely say the new marketing campaign that they have me doing. It’s for National Career Development month. They had me come up with a whole social media campaign. I’m very passionate about informing students about getting involved on campus and about really digging into what KU has to offer. I think this kind of project is how I can spread that message. Is this where you saw yourself as a freshman? When I first started community college, I didn’t know how I would take college in the first place. I was just kind of going to go to get a degree. Then I realized once I started moving along that path and taking more classes, getting involved and doing more things that it was the best thing ever. I probably would have never seen myself in this position as a freshman because I was just there to be there. MICHAEL JACOBS Michael Jacobs is currently a marketing intern for Kutztown University’s Career Development Center. He plans on graduating this December and looks to work with a marketing firm, if not the Air Force.
