Innovision Fall 2018
26 | INNOVISION MAGAZINE GRAD ASSISTANT What are some of your daily responsibilities for this position? As far as my general responsibilities, I would say, meeting with the students who come by here. I review a lot of resumes online on KUCN. I also go to classes and talk to students about the Career Development Center, internships, job search strategies and networking. Kind of like an overall Career Development Center presentation. What qualities do you think are most important to succeed at your position? I think the biggest thing is just realizing that everyday there’s a new way I can learn how to reach somebody. My biggest concern right now is if one week I don’t see students and then the next week I see five, to not be discouraged. What have you learned on the job that you necessarily didn’t in the classroom? What I’m seeing now is the business networking side of things that I didn’t have to go through. My biggest thing is the resume review process. I was trained for two weeks straight on the ideal resume. Now I can look at a resume and say this is what we need to work on. What are some of the challenges you faced when starting your graduate assistant role? Since it’s a new position, we’re learning as we go. It’s unique because it’s a dual whammy. I’m with the Center, but I’m also College of Business. I think the biggest challenge is making sure everybody is on the same page. And outreach, just really making it known that I’m here. How did you find yourself in this position? I was IO (Industrial Organization) Psychology. I thought I was interested in communications more like Public Relations or Human Resources, somewhat of a business realm. I realized through my time using the Career Center that I belonged in higher education. I started to educate myself on this field. This is something I can make a career out of. I knew that I wanted to do an assistantship opportunity to gain more experience. What is something you didn’t expect from your experience here? Not necessarily unexpected, but I did become closer to this connection that I definitely belong working one on one with students. Recently, I realized that I think I would be very good in a counseling setting. I know that I belong in career services and its like, wow I’m really home. What are your plans for the future? I want to go to school to get my master’s in counseling. I also know that I want to work with college students.
