Innovision Fall 2018
24 | INNOVISION MAGAZINE When asked what he wanted to use the minor for, José answered, “Just to make myself more marketable and stand out as an individual.” José has started this process as he has resumes written in both English and Spanish to show possible employers that he has proficiency in both languages. “To be able to talk to more than one type of consumer is pretty important,” he said. When asked who inspires him José said, “I would absolutely say my mother, as cliché as that might be. She had me when she was 18, but that did not stop my mother from getting an Associates degree and she later pursued an online Master’s degree while taking care of two high school kids and my sister who was in middle school. She had to balance work, the family, maintain a clean house and also try to maintain a social life all at the same time.” José takes after his mother as he too juggles different activities throughout his day. He is a Community Assistant in Johnson Hall here on campus and is the Vice President of the National Residence Hall Honorary. He is also a co-chair of Bearfest.Through this position, he has had the opportunity to post content on Kutztown’s Snapchat. José is gearing himself for the long run. He is a competitor in many long distance races. In the seventh grade, he began running cross country. He was offered a scholarship to run for Kutztown University’s Cross-Country team where he has represented well. He is a 2018 PSAC indoor 4x800m relay champion and a part of the 4x800 relay team who holds the school record. Jose is also a three-time scholar athlete as he worked hard on the track and the classroom. He is also on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), where he represents the track and field team for off the track matters. Since the sport is such a big part of his life, José also has a Coaching minor and hopes to one day coach a cross country and track team. He also thinks that the position of an Athletic Director for a program could be something to look forward to. He would like to do this as he pursues the position of an Officer in the Army National Guard. STUDENT FEATURE José Colon-Cruz has always been a part of the College of Business family. He began his journey as a management major, but after a semester, he decided to switch to a sports management major. “I’ve always enjoyed the art, the science and the effort put behind any sport or sport related events,” said José. Something that José knows is important in the world of sports is communication. During his time in the sports management major, he has appreciated learning how to write business letters, create sponsorship proposals and developing risk management plans. Another big thing that José has taken away from the program has been how to recognize the ethics of himself and those around him. José also knew that he wanted to give himself an edge when it came to competing for a job. He wanted to add something to his arsenal that other prospective employees may not have. In high school, José realized his passion for the Spanish language. He completed five different Spanish courses and earned college credits for his score on the AP Spanish exam. Because of this interest, he decided to pick up KU’s Spanish for Modern Business minor during his second semester of his freshman year here at KU. JOSÉ COLON CRUZ ‘19 José Colon-Cruz is a senior Sports Management major with minors in Spanish for Modern Business and Coaching. “I’ve always enjoyed the art, the science and the effort put behind any sport or sport related events.”
