Innovision Fall 2023

26 | INNOVISION MAGAZINE KYLE NEWMAN Kyle Newman, Sport Management Major—among many other titles—possesses a quiet reserve as we take a seat at the end of the large conference table in Old Main for the interview. As Newman started to talk about the titles he’s gained and the impactful experiences he has witnessed while at KU, it is clear that he has a passion for not only sports and management, but also for providing opportunities for his fellow students. “I’ve kind of always been around sports,” Newman explained. “I played baseball at a young age, but got cut from my high school team in my freshman and sophomore year.” This didn’t dissuade Newman from sports. Instead, he was presented a new opportunity as Student Manager by the team’s coach, a parent of Newman’s classmate. With this new role, Newman became interested in the management of sports, leading him to pursue the Sport Management major when looking for a college. “The whole Management Program here at KU just blew me away with everything they had to offer,” Newman explained. It was this, a scholarship, and KU being the perfect distance of being not too far and not too close from his home in Hershey that ultimately influenced his decision to attend KU. “It has been everything I could’ve imagined and far more,” Newman conveyed regarding this decision. “When I first started at KU, I wanted to do my four years and get out. Now I'm like, ‘can I stay a little longer,’” Newman said with a laugh. He realized early on that “your college experience is two dates separated by one dash, and it is up to you what you fill that dash with.” That is exactly what Newman endeavored to do looking over the evidence in his email signature during the interview, explaining each title he’s procured and what it entails. One of his first titles earned was as Treasurer for the Sport Management Club and later becoming President at the end of his sophomore year when the former President and Vice President graduated. This role, Newman expounded, “has not only allowed me to build connections within the industry for myself but also for my classmates.” He has pitched and set up many outings and activities for the group from sporting events and tours to organizing guest speakers in the field to come speak such as MLB player, Adam Rosales. “It was also the role that showed me that I could be a leader in this industry, and I can use this role to provide certain opportunities for others,” Newman explained.
