Innovision Fall 2023

24 | INNOVISION MAGAZINE KEITH HARING FITNESS COURT Imagine you are driving down College Boulevard with Kutztown University’s McFarland Student Union Building Building on your right. Crossing over West Main Street, the swift bend turns the road into Normal Avenue—now look immediately to your right. A brightly colored fitness court with shiny new equipment sits at the corner of Normal Avenue and South Baldy Street neighboring the KU Admissions Center. Driving past, you cannot miss this brightly colored court that features the famous graffiti-like art by renowned artist and activist, Keith Haring. Haring, a native of Kutztown, who often referred to himself as “Keith from Kutztown,” leaves his legacy behind in KU community’s newest fitness addition. When Sport Management Professor, Duane Crider, first heard of the Keith Haring Fitness Court project he thought, “this is a great opportunity for my class” and wanted to get involved. After being delayed for about a year due to grant hold-ups, Crider thought that the project may never come to fruition, but this fall it finally did. Thankfully Sandy Green, KU’s community liaison and government relations assistant, kept working towards the goal of Kutztown being the chosen location for the Court. “The Keith Haring Outdoor Fitness Court will be part art gallery, part outdoor gym, and a point of pride for Kutztown," Green said in a statement regarding the project. "The design and program are initiated by the collaboration of the Keith Haring Foundation in New York, the Outdoor Fitness Court, and the National Fitness Campaign (NFC).” “The Fitness Court has great potential,” Crider said, and “we have plans to add an interactive kiosk on the court to help monitor use.” He looks forward to, in his fitness Dr. Duane Crider, Dr. Michelle Vaughn, Dr. Soojin Kim, Hannah Martin, and Dr. Yongjae Kim pose in front of the new Keith Haring Fitness Court.
