READING The Master of Education in Reading and the Reading Certification is nationally recognized by the Interna- tional Literacy Association and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. The goals of the program are three fold. First, it is intended to prepare reading specialist/literacy coaches who can plan, im- plement, and maintain a developmental instructional program. Second, it provides teachers with the ability to recognize and work effectively with learners who have varying degrees of difficulty in reading, or who have other learning problems. Third, it prepares teachers to collaborate with peers while working as reading spe- cialists/literacy coaches to support best practices in literacy. COURSEWORK The M.Ed. in Reading is a 36 credit program that em- braces best practices to design classroom and intensi- fied literacy instruction to meet the needs of students in grades K-12. Candidates are immersed in diagnostic processes to interpret students’ strengths and needs and then use data to inform daily instruction. The program integrates diversity, children’s literature, and technology into curriculum and instruction. In the six credit summer practicum, candidates work as literacy coaches as well as reading specialists to meet the reading and writing needs of local students. As a summative evaluation, a comprehensive portfolio presentation is required. The portfolio will reflect the professional standards of the International Literacy Association.
