ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) PROGRAM The Pennsylvania Department of Education lists ESL as having the number one teacher shortage in the state. KU’s Department of Secondary Education has been accre- dited by the PA Department of Education to provide the Program Specialist Certificate – English as a Second Language. This program is designed to provide students seeking the ESL certificate with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to address the needs of English Language Learners (ELLs) in a comprehensive EL program. This certification is for certificate holders in all kindergarten through grade 12 programs to be conferred upon completion of or posses- sion of an initial teaching certificate. • 15 credits of class work • 60 hours of fieldwork experience • Students must have a valid PA Instructional I or II Certificate to complete the program • Foreign applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English via the ACTFL English Language OPI The ESL program features both online and blended eve- ning courses to meet working professionals needs.
