MARRIAGE, COUPLE, AND FAMILY COUNSELING MISSION APPLY COURSEWORK The Department of Counselor Education offers a 60 semester hour CACREP accredited Master of Arts degree program in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling. This program provides competent and ethical counseling services to a diverse group of individuals across a wide variety of settings. As a result, students in the program acquire a comprehensive academic knowledge base, develop effective counseling skills, and engage in personal and professional growth activities that enable them to be- come highly skilled practitioners, advocates, and leaders in their fields. The mission of the Marriage, Couple, and Family Counsel- ing degree is to provide a high quality graduate education for individuals pursuing careers in professional counsel- ing. The program is structured around several core tenets: Development of personal awareness of self as a counselor, Knowledge of counseling and psychological concepts, Skills in counseling and mental health service delivery across the life span, and Theoretical and practical training in therapeutic work with individuals, couples, and families. The program consists of core counseling courses, special- ty area courses, and 700 hours of field experience. Given the focus of this program, graduates enter the profession prepared to work in a variety of settings such as commu- nity mental health agencies, Veteran Administration, hos- pitals, drug and alcohol treatment settings, and colleges/ universities. Degree requirements for this program meet the educational requirements for state licensure in Pro- fessional Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the National Certified Counselor (NCC) examination, a state licensure prerequisite.
