30 TOWER | FALL 2024 After graduating from KU, Max Needle ’10 earned a master’s degree from Rutgers University and a Ph.D. from University of Washington— both in geological and earth science/geosciences. Needle used his back- ground in geology to help develop virtual field experiences. He is lead author of a paper published in Geoscience Communication. In October 2023, Shelby McFadden ’11 debuted the young adult novel “Metamorphosis,” the first of a four-part series called Grove Hollow. “Metamorphosis” is a gothic paranormal romance that takes place in the 1980s. She personally designed the books and covers and had an editor for the story. McFadden is working on the second novel in the series, “Senescence,” expected to debut next year. She is also the founder of Touch Her and Die, a romance-focused online bookstore that sells romance novels and apparel. Civil War enthusiast Tyler Budwash ’12, co-owner of Pilger Ruh Brewing, has crafted a special beer in honor of Pottsville’s quintessential citizen-soldier: Gen. James Nagle. The lager is served at the craft brewery in the former Coney Island restaurant building on North Centre Street. True to his German ancestry, Budwash chose a Schwarzbier, or black lager, to commemorate Nagle. It is described as a dark, roast-like lager with a hint of coffee/chocolate flavor. He also added a German lager in honor of the First Defenders, militia units from Pottsville, Reading, Allentown, and Lewisburg who answered Lincoln’s call to arms after Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. Budwash and his partners opened Pilger Ruh in 2021. In April 2023, they opened Pilger Ruh Brewing Taproom and Beer Garden in Gettysburg. Ethan Ross ’12 is a designer and art director living and working in New York City. He specializes in key art development, photo illustration, retouching, and branding. He has experience with 3D Illustration as well. Currently Ross is a senior designer at HBO/ Warner Media and spends most of his time designing key art for upcoming shows. www.ethanrossdesign.com Gurpreet Kaur ’13 lives in New York and works remotely for Summerwood Corporation, a quick service restaurant (QSR) business that operates Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut and Long John Silver’s. Mary Kate Henry ’15 is a graphic designer living in Brooklyn. Since 2022, she has been a senior art director at Buck. Prior to joining Buck, Henry was a designer at Pentagram and Avec. She also runs Resource Resource, a collection of sustainable design projects. www.marykatehenry.com Joanaliz Nieves ’15, M’18 joined Berks Com- munity Health Center as a behavioral health consultant. She is a bilingual Licensed Professional Counselor and is also a Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist for Family. Nieves has worked with a wide array of community agencies within the mental health field, servicing children, families, couples, and individual counseling. Her key areas of focus are working with culturally diverse populations with an emphasis on the Latinx community, survivors of trauma, families and their children on the autism spectrum disorder, depression, and anxiety. She holds both LMFT and LPC licenses. CJ Moyer ’16 and Rogelio Romero partnered to open La Maya Mexican restaurant in Heller- town, Pa. The restaurant offers brunch, graband-go lunch, dinner and a food truck that can be booked in tandem with Moyer’s existing Presley’s Mobile Cocktail Bar business. Cathryn Pugh ’16 joined Penn State Extension as a forestry and wildlife educator in Centre County. She earned a Master of Science degree in Forest Resources from Penn State and brings expertise in agroforestry and native plant education to the Wildlife and Forestry team. Morgan Driggs ’17 joined Berks Community Health Center as a behavioral health consult- ant. Driggs is a Licensed Professional Counselor with the Pennsylvania Department of State, a National Certified Counselor with the National Board for Certified Counselors and a Certified Domestic Abuse Advocate with Safe Berks. She earned a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Immaculata University. Asti Faivre ’17 is the lead graphic designer at Nike in Global Sports Apparel: MLB, NBA, NFL, NCAA, and Global Football. Heather Fox ’17 is the illustrator of 12 children’s books written by her husband, Jonathan Stutzman. She likes to explore the use of color and shapes to create bright and whimsical doodles. Fox and Stutzman also collaborate on school visits where they offer a unique perspective on the book-making process. Their goal is to leave kids excited and inspired by books and the joy of creating. Cori White M’17 is a marriage, couples and family counselor, and practice owner of Our Whole Living Counseling in Reading, Pa. Emily Cantor ’18 is currently employed by the Schuylkill Conservation District as the Environmental Education and Outreach coordinator. She attends Slippery Rock University and is close to completing her master’s degree in environmental education. Since 2014, Cantor has worked with the BSA in ecology and leadership roles and continues to work as a volunteer. Maddison Stewart ’18 works in Washington, D.C. for the Republican State Leadership Committee. At KU, Stewart played field hockey and was a second team all-PSAC forward. Raven Gabriele ’19 is the owner of The Raven 96 in Easton’s Silk Mill which offers daily breakfast/brunch menus as well as catering services. Rita Muro ’19 is a security council affairs officer at the Permanent Mission of Malta to the United Nations. Muro was an international student from Spain who came to KU to play field hockey. As a student at KU, Grace Weikert ’19 developed an interest in science com- munication through her experience taking field classes and video producing for the Chincoteague Bay Field Station.
