26 TOWER | FALL 2024 ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTS Andrea Simpson ’00 had always dreamed of being on “The Amazing Race” with her best friend, Malaina Hatcher ’00. They experienced that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity recently, when they were featured on season 35 of the show. Both Simpson and Hatcher felt that being on the show brought them closer together. They described how they had to depend on each other to get through the challenges and learn their strengths and weaknesses. “I thought we knew each other, but when you’re faced with pressure and under stress, it puts your limits to the test,” Hatcher says. “With us living together for 30 days, we had to figure each other out and help in times of need. Andrea was able to help me and I was able to help her.” “The Amazing Race” is a reality TV show in which teams of two people travel around the world competing with other teams. Teams must deduce clues, navigate in unfamiliar areas, interact with locals, and perform challenges that often highlight aspects of a location's culture. Simpson and Hatcher were the sixth team to be eliminated in season 35. To prepare for “The Amazing Race,” Simpson and Hatcher trained physically and mentally – Hatcher ran with a backpack to improve her endurance. Because the show prevents contestants from using electronics, the pair had to learn geography, memorize flags and their countries, and study different languages. Both Simpson and Hatcher said their favorite place to visit was Thailand. Hatcher loved the floating market by a river. Simpson agreed, adding that the food was the best part about visiting Thailand. “Being on the show was something you will never get to experience. Anyone can travel the world, but not everyone can travel, compete, and meet different people all at once. It was the most amazing experience of a lifetime.” KU friends compete in ‘The Amazing Race’ BY ALEX LYONS ’24
