FALL2022 | TOWER 27 Golden Bear football had a historic season in 2021, achieving unprecedented heights in its 105-year history. After starting the season 1-1, KU won 10-straight games, capturing the PSAC East title and earning the right to host the PSAC title game Nov. 13. The team defeated Slippery Rock to win the second PSAC title in team history and were designated as the top seed in the region for the NCAA playoffs, earning a first-round bye. On Thanksgiving weekend, KU made history again by defeating New Haven for the first time ever, and to advance to the first Super Region I final in team history. For the second straight season, Coach Jim Clements was named the American Football Coaches Association Region I and PSAC East Coach of the Year. Clements, who is 59-22 in seven seasons at KU (a .728 winning percentage), is just two wins shy of tying Hall of Famer George Baldwin as the winningest coach in team history. The KU women’s soccer team was strong once again in 2021. The Golden Bears held a 17-1-2 record, won the PSAC East title and hosted games in both the PSAC and NCAA postseason tournaments. The team also set a record for regular season wins. Kayla Argen ’22 was named the PSAC East Division Athlete of the Year, first team All-American and was a COSIDA Academic All-District selection. Head Coach Erik Burstein, the winningest coach in program history with a record of 195-75-18 at KU (a .677 winning percentage), was named PSAC East Coach of the Year for the second time in his 14 years at KU. The Golden Bear rugby teams competed at the Collegiate Rugby Championships in New Orleans Memorial Day weekend. The women’s team finished in sixth place in the D1 Club Bracket, while the men’s team won the Premier National Cup Final for the program’s first-ever national championship and the university’s first team national championship since men’s powerlifting in the early 1980s.
