26 TOWER | FALL 2022 SPORTS ROUNDUP The Kutztown University women’s basketball team won a school-record 26 games, won the PSAC East title, advanced to and hosted the PSAC Final Four, and received a bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second time in program history. Rylee Derr ’21, the program’s all-time leading scorer, was named an Honorable Mention All-American, while Head Coach Janet Malouf was named the PSAC East Coach of the Year in her 27th season leading the Golden Bears. Andrew Dunn Jr. ’22 of the Golden Bear wresting team became an All-American for the third time in his illustrious career when he finished as the national runner-up in the heavyweight weight class at the NCAA Division II Championships in St. Louis, Mo., in March. Dunn, a graduate student, also secured his second straight PSAC Athlete of the Year and Super Region I Wrestler of the Year after posting a 23-1 record as a senior. He won the heavyweight national championship in 2019 and was 20-0 in 2019-20 heading into nationals, before they were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Dunn won 69 career matches at KU, ninth-most all-time. KU’s nationally ranked softball team defeated Mercyhurst University (7-4) to win the 2022 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship. It was the program’s first conference title since 2013. Kate Ostaszewski cemented her name for tournament MVP with an RBI single to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving Kutztown its first lead of the game. The team won 40 games in 2022 led by Head Coach Judy Lawes, who was named the PSAC East and Dr. Dorothy Moyer KU Women’s Coach of the Year. KU hosted the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament and advanced to the Super Regionals as one of the top 16 teams in Division II. Softball A YEAR TO REMEMBER!
