MSW Laura Navitsky 2020 Agency Name: Cultural Survival Profile: Cultural Survival is an Indigenous - led organization that advocates for Indigenous communities ’ rights to self - determination, their land, culture, and ecosystems. Existing programming includes the Advocacy program and the Community Media and Indigenous Rights Radio programs, each which seek to empower Indigenous Peoples to assert their rights by providing access to information. Field Placement Responsibilities: This year I will work within Cultural Survival's Research and Publications Department, supporting the day - to - day operations of Cultural Survival ’ s programming and assisting in the general administration and production of its publications. Some of my responsibilities this semester will include interviewing sources, such as Indigenous leaders of grassroots social movements, writing articles on social, environmental, and/or economic justice topics, and summarizing journal research and special events. Within my internship I plan to further investigate topics including Indigenous Peoples and the environment, as well as land rights, sovereignty, self - determination, cultural/language preservation, and intergenerational knowledge transfer. Future Goals: In the future, I plan to pursue the emerging field of ecosocial work. I would like to empower and collaborate with Indigenous Peoples to defend their rights and protect the biodiversity of their lands. Department of Social Work
