It’s amaz- ing to see my own growth from my first year here to my last. If I had known what I do now, I wouldn’t have been so stressed in my decision to go to college.” KU BEARS Summer 2019 Olivia is a student fully engaged in her studies and her name has appeared on the Dean’s List. Olivia discovered an interest in research and has worked with the team as- sessing terrapins at Wallops Island, VA. She is appreciative of this opportunity to learn a range of research skills that will serve her well in the future, both professionally and academically. Olivia also completed an internship at a physician’s office. Outside the classroom, Olivia is the treasurer of the Plant Club. Olivia would like to continue her education and is currently considering physician assistant programs. “I enjoy almost everything here. It’s really, really, great. It’s a great expe- rience, great school. I made great friends here, and I have a good time.” Noah was invited by his Physics professors to participate in a project conduct- ing research on solar cells. Noah is excited about his studies and research in Physics and hopes that his undergraduate work will make him a strong can- didate for graduate programs. After graduation, Noah hopes to find employ- ment in the field of renewable energy. Major: Physics Year: Junior Major: Geography - Environmental Minors: Spanish & GIS Certificate Year: Junior “I was kind of nervous about how I was going to acclimate, but I have made good relationships with my professors here. I definitely feel like they’ve helped me say I solidly want to be a geography major.” Madison was awarded funding to attend the 2020 American Association of Geogra- phers Annual Meeting in Denver, CO, after being selected to the Middle States Ge- ography Bowl team. Her research focuses on how climate change and climate science is taught in elementary and secondary education. Madison is an Honors student who is excited about doing and presenting research. She is a member of Quidditch Club and Geography Club and is involved with the Fundraising and New Student Orien- tation committees in the Honors Program. She plans to continue her studies to work towards a master’s degree and potentially a Ph.D. “Just reaching out to people, getting involved in things that you might not think you would enjoy at first, like if it doesn’t seem like something you might like, but at least trying things, getting to know people.” KU BEARS Summer 2019 Jessica’s research as a KU BEAR with Dr. Stone was a part of a six-year study on the population rates of terrapins at Wallops Island, Virginia. This project taught Jessica about the whole research process, from applying for funds to the daily work involved in a field study. Jessica has been involved on campus in various roles, such as being President of the Environmental Action Club and Treasurer for Friends for Rachel on campus. She hopes to find a job in an environmental-related area after graduation. Major: Environmental Science - Biology Minor: Philosophy Year: Senior “When you get out of your comfort zone, that’s when you actually get to do things. That’s when you actually get to enjoy your experience.” A Board of Governors Scholarship recipient, Taylor has applied to medical school and used her time at Kutztown to lay a foundation to help her reach her goal of becoming a doctor. In the winter of 2018, she had the opportu- nity to shadow a hand surgeon both in the operating room as well as in his office while he was seeing patients. She is the president of the Health Careers Society and the treasurer of the Future Physicians Club. As an officer in these clubs, Taylor has helped mentor other students interested in medical and health career options. Major: Biology - Pre-Medical Minor: Biochemistry Year: Senior Olivia Crouthamel Noah Cox Madison Clark Jessica Christ Taylor Champ “I love that the STEM field is always changing and there is always something new to discover. I have always had a natural skill for STEM since I could remember.” KU BEARS Summer 2019 Reagin is a strong student whose name has appeared regularly on the Dean’s List. Reagin has participated in a research project with Dr. Sanders since her junior year and received a KU BEARS grant to work on this project during the summer of 2019. She has presented her work at multiple conferences including the PASSHE STEM Conference and the Saint Joseph’s Sigma Chi STEM Conference. Reagin is a recipi- ent of the NASA Pennsylvania Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship, a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success, and also a member of the Chemistry Club. Reagin has received a job offer to work in industry after graduation. Major: Biochemistry Year: Senior Reagin Carpenter
