College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Dean’s Scholars 4 5 College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Dean’s Scholars “I submitted my paper to a competition for undergraduates, and I ended up win- ning the competition. I am really proud of it, not because I won a paper competi- tion, but because I presented in front of people.” Tianna is an excellent student whose name regularly appeared on the Dean’s List. With Dr. Davis, she conducted research on atmospheric instability in the Mid-Atlantic United States, resulting in poster and paper presentations at national and regional conferences, respectively. At the regional conference, Tianna won a competition for the best undergrad- uate paper, and she currently has two manuscripts under review for publication. Tianna completed two internships: one with the City of Reading’s Public Works Department, and another with the Wildlands Conservancy in Emmaus, PA. Tianna was a member and offi- cer of the Geography Club, and a member of the Geography Honor Society. Tianna hopes to continue on to graduate school. Major: Environmental Science - Geography Minor: Mathematics Year: Graduated in Fall 2019 Tianna Andrews “Do not let others’ perspectives bother the perspective you have of your- self. Don’t let what other people think of you affect how you see yourself.” When Tracy arrived at KU, she understood that getting involved would help her achieve her professional and personal goals, so she assumed the position of Vice President for the Black Student Union and became Vice President of WAVE (Women Achieving the Vision of Excellence). Tracy is also currently the LAS representative on SGB. During Summer 2019, Tracy was awarded an internship through The Washington Center in Washington, DC, where she took classes and worked in an office environment. Tracy learned a lot about herself through this opportunity and is now more comfortable stepping out of her comfort zone to have new learning experiences. Major: Psychology Year: Senior Tracy Alcee “Don’t be afraid to say you don’t know something. There are a lot of answers that you might not even know you’re looking for.” Zoey is an Honors Program student whose name has appeared on the Dean’s List every semester. Zoey has been the recipient of the Sesquicentennial Scholarship and the Hearst Foundation Scholarship. She is the Poetry Editor and a copy editor for the Shoofly Magazine as well as Senior Editor for HerCampus KU. She is a tutor in the University Writing Center and she has participated in the KU Com- position Conference. Zoey will graduate in May and begin her studies in the MFA in Writing and Publishing program at Vermont College of Fine Arts in the fall, hoping to be a published poetry and fantasy author. Major: English - Professional Writing Minor: Public Relations Year: Senior Zoey Adam Majors: Computer Science & Mathematics Year: Junior “I’m in the computer science and the math departments, and those professors know what they’re talking about. When you take 100 and above classes, they really care about talking with you and making sure that you know what you’re doing.” Matthew Bartlett KU BEARS Summer 2019 Matthew is a strong student whose name has appeared on the Dean’s List and is currently engaged in research with Dr. Schwesinger. Matthew was awarded a KU BEARS Research grant in 2019 to study robots and how they under- stand the space around them. He has also studied infiltration and inflow, which evaluates rainwater in drainage wastewater systems; this research was presented to a local townhall meeting. Matthew is the treasurer of KU’s Fenc- ing Club. After graduation, Matthew plans to either continue his education or find a job in industry. Kristen conducted research with Dr. Heineman that focused on the evolution of a virus under conditions of direct competition between two different bacteriophages affecting the same virus. Kristen presented her results at two conferences: one regional and one national. In the future, Kristen would like to continue to conduct research and present her findings at conferences. “The professors are the key part of why I’m glad I went to KU because they give you a lot of opportunities. Because if you wanted to do re- search, if you want to go forward, they’re going to let you do that.” Kristen Bailey Major: Biology - Molecular/Micro/Cell Minor: Mathematics Year: Graduated in Fall 2019 “Put yourself out there. Seriously. Get involved in something that you’re passionate about and make friends along the way. The relationships I’ve formed with other people and professors is what is making my experience here so memorable.” Vivian is a strong student whose name regularly appeared on the Dean’s List and who completed her Bachelor’s degree at KU in December. She is currently working as a graduate assistant for KU’s Small Business Development Center as she completes her Master’s degree in Computer Science in the Information Technology track. Vivian is a committed KU community member who played a key role in the formation and rise to prominence of the new Women in STEM organization. Vivian also uses her experience as a transfer student to help new transfer students get acclimated to KU. Major: Information Technology Year: Graduate Student Vivian Azar
