College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Dean’s Scholars 32 33 College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Dean’s Scholars Hanna Templin Major: Business Administration - Finance Minors: Computer Science & Spanish Year: Senior Hanna is an excellent student whose name has appeared on the Dean’s List every semester since transferring to KU. Hanna has also been preparing for her future by undertaking internships with RKL Wealth Management (spring 2019) and PFM Asset Management (summer 2019). She is interested in internships with KU Small Business Development Center, possibly for spring 2020, as well as with Janney Montgomery Scott in spring 2020. Hanna is currently preparing for the KU Undergraduate Research and Creativity Con- ference. She is the president of the Finance Club. Hanna wants to work in the business financial field before continuing her education in either Financial Risk Management or in an MBA program. “Put yourself out there. I’ve had more opportunities now that I’ve put myself in positions to earn them. The more you put yourself out there, the more opportu- nities you’re going to get.” Huong Tran Major: Biochemistry Year: Sophomore KU BEARS Summer 2019 Huong is a strong student whose name has appeared on the Dean’s List every semester so far. In her first year at KU, she asked one of her professors about getting involved in a research; she is now involved with two projects. She is researching the most effective washing strategies for removing pesticides from fruit, and the other focuses on the cauterization of peptides to create new fusion peptides. She has presented her research at the MidAtlantic Region Meeting of the American Chemical Society and the PASS- HE STEM Conference. Huong also works and spends time at the multicultural center, and she enjoys going to community meetings hosted by the science departments. “If you want to get involved in research, start as soon as possible. Come talk to your professors, go to their office hours. You will never know what wonderful opportunities they know or may suggest for you.” Ana Tuzio Major: Social Work Minor: Psychology Year: Senior Ana is an excellent student who has been on the Dean’s List every semester since arriving at KU in Fall 2017. Dr. Wei hired Ana to be her Research Assistant on her IRB-approved research project. She is a member of Alpha Phi Omega, has served as a Diversity Council Representative, and has been active with the Social Workers and Advocates of Kutztown. Ana works as a peer tutor and a note taker for the Disability Services Office. Ana is also an intern with Concern Professional Services to Chil- dren, an agency in Fleetwood, PA. Ana hopes to work in an area of adoption services after graduation. “I want to be a resource for people, and I think social work is a perfect platform for that. I’m thankful I’ve been able to find this passion, and I feel very fortunate to have been given opportunities to find and pursue it.” Laura Stackhouse Major: Anthropology Year: Senior Laura is an excellent student whose name has been on the Dean’s List every semester and whose writing and communication skills have been recognized by her professors. According to her professors, she has the “ability to grasp and analyze difficult theoretical concepts.” Laura’s curiosity and analytical abilities have led her to noteworthy conclusions in paper assignments as well as at KU’s archaeology field school in Stoddartsville. Laura plans to go into public health and has been accepted into the Human Genetics Master’s degree program at the University of Pittsburgh. “I have not only learned many things about myself as a person, but I have also learned how to be a good student, how to persevere through whatever issues may come my way, and to always have faith that I can achieve what I put my mind and heart to.” Alex Swift Major: Physics - Astronomy Minor: Mathematics Year: Senior Alex is an excellent student whose name has appeared on the Dean’s List. He came to KU with an interest in research, and he has been part of Dr. Reed’s team that studies binary stars and exoplanets. He has additionally contrib- uted to the KU community by being a student volunteer for the STEM tour during which he talked about his work on exoplanet discovery and the study of binary stars. Alex plans to continue research in graduate school, perhaps in the area of astrophysics. “Experience in research is good so graduate schools can see you know the pro- cesses to go through. You’ll be ahead of the game once you get there.” Sierra Taylor Major: Environmental Science - Geography Year: Senior Sierra is a hard-working student whose name has appeared on the Dean’s list, and she has been awarded a basketball scholarship. She has presented her research on nocturnal tornados at the 2019 American Association of Geogra- phers Annual Meeting in Washington DC, where she won the poster competi- tion. She plans to present at the same conference in 2020. During the fall 2019 semester, Sierra interned for the Borough of Emmaus as their GIS Technician. Sierra is a part of the Geography Club and the Health Careers Society Club and hopes to earn her master’s degree in Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology. “My experience at KU has molded me into the woman I am today. Working in the Geography Department and being guided in the right direction by faculty members, has allowed me to discover my true passion for weather.”
