College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Dean’s Scholars 20 21 College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Dean’s Scholars “What really bolstered my experience here was feeling like I was an active member of the Kutztown community. It’s empowering, and it leads to success. Try to get involved any way you can.” Julia is an excellent student who maintains a high GPA and earns Dean’s List sta- tus. In her position as research assistant, Julia has assisted with literature reviews and data entry, and last semester she was part of the team that presented on this work at Millersville University. She served as President of the Social Workers and Advocates of Kutztown student group for two years; Julia has also worked on projects with the Women’s Center and FMLA to raise awareness about human trafficking. Upon graduation, Julia will move to Istanbul where she hopes to work as a volunteer in a refugee camp. Major: Social Work Minor: Philosophy Year: Senior “Besides technical skills and fundamental knowledge, I learned to open myself up to chances and challenges at KU.” Yau is an excellent student whose name has regularly appeared on the Dean’s List. Yau was also a recipient of a NSF S-STEM CARE scholarship. Last sum- mer, Yau was chosen to work in the LAS Dean’s office to help departments migrate their websites to the new Content Management System. Yau is also a committed KU community member; she is the secretary of the Chinese Stu- dents and Scholars Association and a member of the Women in STEM Club. After graduation, Yau hopes to find work in her field that will allow her to continue to make positive contributions to her company, society, and family. Major: Information Technology Minor: Business Year: Senior “Don’t be afraid to expand your horizons because that’s what college is for— meeting new people and opening your mind to new ideas.” Victoria is a dedicated student who has made quite an impression on the Modern Language Studies Department. She came to KU with a bachelor’s degree already fromThe Culinary Institute of America. Since arriving at KU, Victoria has participated in the Study Abroad Program at Valladolid, Spain, and she has been an important community member in her department. She helped organize a Day of the Dead event at KU and helped host visits by local elementary and high school students. Victoria would like to find an interna- tional internship with an educational focus for next summer and hopes to enroll in a master’s program to earn her secondary teaching certification. Major: Spanish Year: Senior “I feel I have become a well-rounded computer scientist with the education I received here at KU. Also, KU taught me how to manage my time, to start early on projects because you don’t know what problems you can run into, and how to work with different peoples’ skills and abilities.” Angela is working toward her master’s degree after earning her bachelor’s from KU in January 2020. While working on her BS degree in Information Technology, she also earned a minor in Math and her name appeared on the Dean’s List. She has worked with Dr. Parson, through a PASSHE Faculty Pro- fessional Development Grant, to conduct multimedia programming research and create fun and useful visual simulations. Angela has begun work on her thesis the topic of which is visualizing machine learning models used for data analysis. Major: Computer Science Year: Graduate Student Kathleen is an outstanding student whose name has appeared on the Dean’s List every semester. She is a committed KU community mem- ber, serving on the Leadership Team and as president of the executive board of the Kutztown Christian Fellowship. She participates in Out of the Darkness Walks and KUBoK. Major: Psychology - Paralegal Studies Minor: Spanish Year: Senior KU BEARS Summer 2019 Liannah is a strong student and has appeared on the Dean’s List from the start of her career at KU. She received the opportunity to do ad- ditional mathematics research over the summer with Dr. Kronenthal titled Cycles in Algebraically Defined Graphs. Her goal is to attend graduate school after earning her Bachelor’s degree.
