The interactions with people I have on a daily basis, because I’m involved in so much, make it worth it.” KU BEARS Summer 2019 Christine maintains a very high GPA and her name regularly appears on the Dean’s List. She has been involved in two KU BEARS research projects, one with Dr. Hernandez inves- tigating the prevalence and forms of parasites on organic farms. Christine has also been a regular tutor and mentor for science students at KU. She is additionally fully engaged in the KU community; Christine is a University Ambassador and a member of the University Marching Band. She has three jobs on campus and is involved in many clubs. Christine has applied to veterinary schools to pursue her dream of becoming a veterinarian. Major: Biology - Pre-Medical Minors: Biochemistry & Mathematics Year: Senior “Learning good time management and understanding that it’s definitively beneficial to plan and manage your time accordingly based on your academics and extracurriculars, plus making time for yourself to do things that you enjoy, will help you to succeed in the other areas of your life.” Allison is an excellent student whose name has appeared regularly on the Dean’s List. Allison is co-captain of KU’s Women’s Volleyball team with the position of outside hitter. Allison recently received the Division II Athletic Director’s Association Aca- demic Achievement Award. She is extensively involved in extracurriculars, including being president of Students Against Destructive Decisions, executive board member of the National Society of Leadership and Success, a PSAC scholar-athlete, and a member of the Honors Program. Allison hopes to complete research with professors during summer 2020. She plans on pursuing a future career in medicine/osteopathic medicine. Majors: Biochemistry & Biology Year: Junior Major: Secondary Education - Social Studies Minor: German Year: Junior Kendre, whose name regularly appears on the Dean’s List, was hired as a student work- er for the German Language Conversation Partners program to tutor and mentor other students due to their success and enthusiasm about the program. Kendre takes her studies seriously and loves history. She hopes to graduate from KU with her teaching degree and return to her home school district to inspire students in the way her teachers inspired her. Kendre is very engaged in the KU community, captaining the Quidditch team as well as being a member of the German Club, Honors Club, and Board of Governors. “Even though college might seem intimidating at first or even overwhelming with all the work you’re expected to do, you will be able to push through and achieve all you want to! Don’t give up, and especially if things start getting tough, remember that there are people here to help you.” “I have become so close to my professors. I feel like I can come to them with anything, and I can completely depend on them, which is great.” Megan is a strong student whose name appeared regularly on the Dean’s List. Megan’s academic success and work ethic were highlighted during the fall 2019 semester when she completed a 12-credit internship (400 hours) with the Borough of Tamaqua. According to her internship supervisor, Megan’s efforts on the town’s CRIZ (City Revitalization Improvement Zone) project were highly commendable. Megan was thrilled to be able to work in and help a community to which she has ties. Megan hopes to eventually earn a master’s degree in Health Care Administration. Major: Public Administration Year: Graduated in Fall 2019 “Reach out to your professors and the other people in your classes. I met some pretty incredible people this way, and the professors can open your eyes to all kinds of new opportunities.” Takumi has been working on a research project with Dr. Junker; the project exam- ines apoptosis proteins for possibilities to affect apoptosis. Takumi presented results from this research at the PASSHE STEM Conference in October and was accepted to The American Chemical Society Conference in Philadelphia, March 2020. Takumi has also been able to maintain an excellent GPA and work as a supplemental in- structor and tutor for chemistry courses. He is a member of Phi Sigma Phi National Honor Fraternity, the KU Honors Program, and the vice president of the Chemistry Club. Takumi has plans to continue his education in graduate school to become a research scientist. Majors: Biochemistry & Chemistry Year: Junior Major: Environmental Science - Geography Year: Senior “I never felt academically at home before arriving to Kutztown. Every- thing just started making sense, and I’ve never been happier.” Ryan is a hard-working student who has impressed professors with his focus on both his studies and the research project he has joined. With Dr. Davis, Ryan is looking into the frequency and probability of rainout events in Major League Baseball games from 1950 to the present and whether that aligns with climate change projections of precipitation changes. They hope to present this research at the 2020 American Association of Geographers Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado. Ryan is also the secretary of the Geography Club and a member of the Environmental Science Book Club. Ryan hopes to start work- ing in the soil testing field after graduation.
