Speakers Dr. JAMES D. JACKSON, associate professor of psychology, has an award-winning tenure in his 16 years at KU. He is the co-director of the Achievement Initiative for Male Success program, and a faculty and spiritual advisor for several student organizations. He serves on the faculty committee for the Fredrick Douglass Institute and is the vice president of the Black Faculty Caucus. Jackson is a retired pastor of 20 years, most recently the senior pastor of Goodwin Memorial Baptist Church in Harrisburg, Pa., and is currently the city chaplain for the Harrisburg City Police Department. He serves as an adjunct professor at Moravian University, a position he also held at Moravian Theological Seminary and Muhlenberg College. He is a co-author of two psychology textbooks entitled, “Understanding Psychology,” and “Charting the Human Development: A Life-Span Perspective.” While at KU, Jackson has been bestowed with the Excellence in Service to Students Award by the National Society of Leadership and Success, and the Outstanding Campus-Wide Inclusive Award from the KU Multicultural Center. Jackson received his Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park. He did his graduate work at the University of Kansas, where he received his master’s and Ph.D. in cognitive experimental psychology with a concentration in gerontology. He later earned a Master of Arts in theological studies from Moravian Theological Seminary, Bethlehem, Pa. KAITLYN CAMPBELL of Schwenksville, Pa., graduates today with a Master of Education Pre-K-4 with certification. She earned her Bachelor of Science in psychology from West Chester University in 2021. During her time at KU, Campbell served as a dedicated special education paraprofessional, making significant contributions to co-taught classrooms on a one-on-one basis. Her responsibilities extended to crafting tailored content to meet the unique needs of students, employing a Person-Centered Approach (PCA) to ensure a personalized and effective educational experience. Working seamlessly with students ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade, Campbell strived to foster an inclusive environment that embraced diversity and individual learning styles. Additionally, she took charge of developing comprehensive schedules and setting achievable daily, weekly and monthly goals, reflecting her commitment to creating a supportive and structured learning environment for all students under her care. Campbell believes her ordinary journey as a hardworking student who faced challenges resonates with most of the student body. By sharing a philosophy that dreams are often picked up rather than predestined, she hopes to inspire fellow graduates to see themselves in the ordinary, yet determined pursuit of their goals

RORY MISKO of Carbondale, Pa., graduates summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in education in both secondary and special education, including minors in women, gender and sexuality studies and political science. While at KU, Misko served as an intern in the Office of Disability Service’s MyPlace Program, working with KU students on the autism spectrum to help them successfully transition to college and prepare for post-college life. Additionally, she worked to care for and mentor young children in a YCARE program, assisting in planning and executing academically and socially beneficial programming. Misko served as a desk receptionist and community assistant with Housing and Residence Life. She worked to create a welcoming community for KU students by hosting events and enforcing KU policy. She was the president of the Golden Bear Dance Company, recruitment chair and secretary of the Performing Dance Portmanteau, and treasurer of Kappa Delta Pi sorority. Following her graduation, Misko has her sights set on a master's degree in business and marketing, with a keen interest in contributing her expertise to the marketing teams of post-secondary institutions. Simultaneously, during her master's program, she will undertake the role of an entry-level marketing coordinator at Marywood University, where she will specialize in enhancing their dining services.

MARK R. WEAVER, Esq. ’83, M’85 is a nationally respected attorney and crisis communications expert with nearly four decades of experience advising clients including governors, U.S. senators, members of Congress, Supreme Court justices, as well as business and education leaders. Weaver earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in public administration from KU, where he also served as a graduate teaching assistant in the political science department. As a freshman at KU, Weaver was elected president of Lehigh Hall and later held top positions on Student Government Board and as a resident assistant in Berks, Rothermel and Johnson halls. He was a student legal advocate and served as chairman of the Student Faculty Judicial Board. His senior year internship was with the Montgomery County (Pa.) Juvenile Probation Department; he later wrote his master’s thesis on the juvenile probation system. Minoring in telecommunications and working as a disc jockey and production manager at the KU radio station prepared Weaver well for his work in communications and media. He has produced more than a thousand TV and radio commercials for campaigns and candidates, earning a dozen national awards for creativity. A few years after earning his second degree from KU, President Ronald Reagan appointed Weaver to be spokesman for the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington. His other government posts have included communications director with the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and Deputy Attorney General of Ohio, and he serves as a judicial magistrate and acting judge. Weaver later joined a major Columbus law firm as a litigation partner. In that role, he regularly argued in the Supreme Court of Ohio and served as a special prosecutor across the state. Following additional graduate studies at the University of Delaware, Weaver earned his Juris Doctorate from the Delaware Law School at Widener University. He spent two decades as an adjunct professor at The Ohio State University College of Law and the graduate school at University of Akron. The latter awarded Weaver an honorary certificate in Applied Politics and later named him Distinguished Chair of that university’s Bliss Institute of Applied Politics. He is now an adjunct professor at the School of Government at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. KU previously honored Weaver with its inaugural Early Career Excellence Alumni Award and with the Rothermel Outstanding Alumni Award. KU’s Student Government Board also recognized him with its Distinguished Alumni Award. And he was recently inducted into Abington High School’s Hall of Fame from which he graduated in 1979. Weaver regularly lectures around the country on a wide variety of legal and communications topics. He takes his zeal for Kutztown with him – he is still introduced as a proud KU graduate, even to those unfamiliar with the university. His op-ed writing is regularly featured in Newsweek, USA Today, the Washington Post and other major U.S. newspapers. He has been interviewed by every major national media outlet in America, including 60 Minutes and Nightline. Weaver is the author of an acclaimed book on communications, “A Wordsmith’s Work,” now in its fourth edition. He is finishing a second non-fiction book on crisis communications, and is working to publish his first novel next year. He and his wife, Lori, reside in Central Ohio and are the proud parents of two grown children and an infant grandson.

Honors Honors designations for the purposes of the commencement ceremony are determined according to the academic record exclusive of the last semester of attendance. Undergraduate students who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.40 or higher will be provided an honors medallion, and will also have the honors designated in this program. Undergraduate students who achieve the honors designation following the completion of the semester are recognized through a notation on the diploma and their official transcript. The following cumulative quality point averages must be earned to achieve graduation with honors: cum laude 3.40, magna cum laude 3.60 and summa cum laude 3.80. Latin, the medieval language of scholars, is still used on the commencement program to keep with tradition in designating honors. * CUM LAUDE — with honor ** MAGNA CUM LAUDE — with high honor *** SUMMA CUM LAUDE — with highest honor __________________________ A NOTE on ACADEMIC REGALIA Academic regalia worn at American college exercises today goes back in its essential features to the middle ages. The oldest universities of northern Europe, such as Paris and Oxford, grew out of church schools, hence they wore clerical garb largely borrowed from the monastic dress of their day. The head covering was developed out of the skullcap worn by the clergy in cold weather. In the universities this skullcap acquired a point on top that gradually evolved into a tassel. In this country it has been replaced by the familiar mortarboard, which still however, retains the medieval tassel. The gown worn today is the medieval roba and seems to have been borrowed from the habit of the Benedictine monks. Bachelors and masters could be distinguished by the simplicity or elaborateness of their gowns – the masters’ gowns were often furred – and this survives today in the ornamentation found on doctoral gowns. The wide velvet borders extending down the front of the doctoral gown, the velvet chevrons on the lined bell sleeves, and the borders of most hoods, are in the color of the scholarly field of the wearer. The hood (the medieval caputium) was originally worn over the head, and otherwise dropped onto the shoulders like a cowl. Master’s degree holders wear distinctively colored hoods that signify the wearer’s degree. The most common of these seen in the procession are: Arts, Letters and Humanities........................... UniversitySymbols The UNIVERSITY MACE, used almost exclusively at commencement exercises or other formal, ceremonial functions, is a decorative version of the weapon of the same name used in the Middle Ages, and represents the authority of the university. The Kutztown University mace was designed by Stephen Culberson ’16, a crafts major, at the request of the KU Student Government Board, and was presented to the president as a gift on behalf of all students. The mace is made of walnut from a tree that existed on Culberson’s grandfather’s farm. The lathe work was performed by Culberson. The date noted on the mace represents the year in which the university originally received its charter and the year of the university’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The crowning element atop the mace is the “keystone,” which was used in the original Keystone State Normal School official seal. Since the inception of the university, the mace has traditionally been carried by a grand marshal at official university ceremonies. The honor of grand marshal is bestowed by the president, and usually is a tenured faculty member who has attained the greatest seniority. PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLIONS have served for centuries as remembrances of specific events or to recognize meritorious service or conduct. Medallions have also been used and worn to indicate leadership and authority. The Kutztown University presidential medallion is worn by the university president with academic regalia at formal functions such as commencement. The medallion serves to identify the university president as the leader of a community of scholars. The design elements of the medallion incorporate recognition of achieving university status and display the commonwealth seal. On the chain supporting the medallion are the names of all who have served the institution as either principal or president. Additionally, all preceding names of the institution – Keystone State Normal School, Kutztown State Teachers College and Kutztown State College – as well as drawings of the university’s most historic buildings, are engraved.
