Speakers Dr. ALEXANDER D. HERNANDEZ has more than 30 years' experience in research and education-related roles at various institutes and universities around the world, including The Southeast Environmental Research Center at Florida International University, The Primate Research Institute of Kyoto University, The Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics at Penn State University, and The James Hutton Institute in Scotland. For the last 11 years, he has been a professor of biology at Kutztown University. At KU, Hernandez teaches courses in parasitology, aquatic ecology and research methods in biology. He has supervised more than 30 undergraduate students in independent research projects, with most of them presenting their work at regional, national and international conferences. In addition, he helps supervise undergraduate internships at collaborating local health networks and non-profit organizations. Hernandez is a parasitologist whose research focuses on the ecology of parasite transmission, host-parasite interactions and the management of parasitic diseases in wildlife and livestock. His research has resulted in more than 20 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles and book chapters on the biology of parasites in a wide range of hosts and eco-systems, including trout streams in Michigan, blackwater streams in New Jersey, hyenas in Africa, monkeys in Japan, wild rabbits in Scotland and organic pigs in Pennsylvania as well as other states across the country. Hernandez earned a B.A. in biological sciences from Rutgers University–New Brunswick in 1994, followed by his M.S. degree in ecology, evolution and behavior from Michigan State University in 1997. He earned a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Rutgers University–New Brunswick in 2006. SUMMIA SHAH of Allentown, Pa., graduates with a Master of Science in computer science with a concentration in software development. She previously earned a Bachelor of Science in software engineering from the University of Portsmouth, U.K., in 2019. After completing her undergraduate degree, she worked as a software engineer at Blueteq Ltd., where she modernized systems and implemented object-oriented programming principles. She later completed a Master of Business Administration with a focus on business computing and analytics from DeSales University in 2023. During her time at KU, Shah served as a graduate assistant in the Office of the Vice Provost, where she worked as an information technology project manager. In this role, she analyzed and mapped reporting workflows. She also completed a Power Platform certificate to support her research into AI tools, and collaborated with the marketing team to improve visibility and usability of KU ADVANCE’s online presence. In addition, Shah completed several independent and academic projects, including a cryptocurrency analytics web application, and a systems-level project focusing on inter-process communication. Demonstrating leadership skills, she took on the responsibilities of a software project manager, planning and coordinating as though she were overseeing a team of 25 developers to deliver a full software product lifecycle.

TESIA N. CAMPBELL of Mertztown, Pa., graduates magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in communication studies and a minor in performance and storytelling. She has experience in theater production, teaching, acting and writing, which has driven her passion for using communication and performance to connect, inspire and create a positive impact. Campbell's KU journey began in the mid-90s. After a couple of semesters, she changed course and earned two associates' degrees in communications and liberal arts from Lehigh Carbon Community College. She became the founder, artistic director and executive producer of Global ImpACTORS Group (GIG) from 2013-23, which produced 12 stage plays and several short films and videos. She is an accomplished playwright, producer and filmmaker, as well as a board member and volunteer for several nonprofit organizations, working within local and national communities and with various charities. She gives her time and talents generously to causes including local theatre and housing insecurity. Seeing her daughter, Jada Lichtenwalner, go on to graduate from KU in 2022, Campbell found the drive to return to the university to complete her bachelor's degree. While completing her degree, she maintained her full-time job. Since 2021, she has been a marketing manager at Touchstone Capital, Inc., Pittsburgh, where she leads marketing and manages content creation, webinar creation, presentation design and video production. Honors Honors designations for the purposes of the commencement ceremony are determined according to the academic record exclusive of the last semester of attendance. Undergraduate students who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.40 or higher will be provided an honors medallion, and will also have the honors designated in this program. Undergraduate students who achieve the honors designation following the completion of the semester are recognized through a notation on the diploma and their official transcript. The following cumulative quality point averages must be earned to achieve graduation with honors: cum laude 3.40, magna cum laude 3.60 and summa cum laude 3.80. Latin, the medieval language of scholars, is still used on the commencement program to keep with tradition in designating honors. * CUM LAUDE — with honor ** MAGNA CUM LAUDE — with high honor *** SUMMA CUM LAUDE — with higheSt honor __________________________ A NOTE on ACADEMIC REGALIA Academic regalia worn at American college exercises today goes back in its essential features to the middle ages. The oldest universities of northern Europe, such as Paris and Oxford, grew out of church schools, hence they wore clerical garb largely borrowed from the monastic dress of their day. The head covering was developed out of the skullcap worn by the clergy in cold weather. In the universities this skullcap acquired a point on top that gradually evolved into a tassel. In this country it has been replaced by the familiar mortarboard, which still however, retains the medieval tassel. The gown worn today is the medieval roba and seems to have been borrowed from the habit of the Benedictine monks. Bachelors and masters could be distinguished by the simplicity or elaborateness of their gowns – the masters’ gowns were often furred – and this survives today in the ornamentation found on doctoral gowns. The wide velvet borders extending down the front of the doctoral gown, the velvet chevrons on the lined bell sleeves, and the borders of most hoods, are in the color of the scholarly field of the wearer. The hood (the medieval caputium) was originally worn over the head, and otherwise dropped onto the shoulders like a cowl. Master’s degree holders wear distinctively colored hoods that signify the wearer’s degree. The most common of these seen in the procession are: Arts, Letters and Humanities........................... UniversitySymbols The UNIVERSITY MACE, used almost exclusively at commencement exercises or other formal, ceremonial functions, is a decorative version of the weapon of the same name used in the Middle Ages, and represents the authority of the university. The Kutztown University mace was designed by Stephen Culberson ’16, a crafts major, at the request of the KU Student Government Board, and was presented to the president as a gift on behalf of all students. The mace is made of walnut from a tree that existed on Culberson’s grandfather’s farm. The lathe work was performed by Culberson. The date noted on the mace represents the year in which the university originally received its charter and the year of the university’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The crowning element atop the mace is the “keystone,” which was used in the original Keystone State Normal School official seal. Since the inception of the university, the mace has traditionally been carried by a grand marshal at official university ceremonies. The honor of grand marshal is bestowed by the president, and usually is a tenured faculty member who has attained the greatest seniority. PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLIONS have served for centuries as remembrances of specific events or to recognize meritorious service or conduct. Medallions have also been used and worn to indicate leadership and authority. The Kutztown University presidential medallion is worn by the university president with academic regalia at formal functions such as commencement. The medallion serves to identify the university president as the leader of a community of scholars. The design elements of the medallion incorporate recognition of achieving university status and display the commonwealth seal. On the chain supporting the medallion are the names of all who have served the institution as either principal or president. Additionally, all preceding names of the institution – Keystone State Normal School, Kutztown State Teachers College and Kutztown State College – as well as drawings of the university’s most historic buildings, are engraved.
