AlcoholEDU: First-year students are encouraged to complete an online alcohol awareness training program provided by Health and Wellness Services. It includes tailored content that engages abstainers, light to moderate drinkers, and frequent drinkers with customized messaging. It educates students on alcohol’s mental and physical effects and prepares students to engage in bystander intervention. In addition to the web-based program, HPAOD Services offers alcohol prevention programming for students and student groups through workshops: • Step UP! is a comprehensive bystander intervention program • Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) Facilitator Training and BASICS services for students • Cannabis Screening and Intervention for College Students (CASICS) Facilitator Training and CASICS services for students • Kutztown University’s Health & Wellness Expos • NEW Embracing Cultural Communities, a prevention curriculum explicitly designed for diverse student communities • Peer-to-peer training for undergraduate and graduate students on well-being and substance abuse prevention programs • Collegiate Recovery Programs to include weekly meetings, Sober Curious informational meetings, and Freedom Place a special interest living community. • Freedom From Smoking for tobacco cessation. Presentation by the Chief/Deputy Chief of Police: The KU Chief or Deputy Chief of Police addresses groups on safety measures at the opening of each new student orientation session. Additionally, orientation facilitators receive training from Public Safety and the Women’s Center on the subject of personal safety, bystander awareness and mandated reporting. At the conclusion of each orientation program, orientation facilitators lead group discussions on student concerns and how to keep safe on campus. The presentation made by Public Safety was offered through an online video and by in-person presentations. Additional training on personal safety, bystander awareness and mandated reporting was conducted by the professional staff of the New Student Orientation (NSO) program, followed by a group discussion facilitated by the NSO staff. Additionally, a presentation was made by Collegiate Empowerment, a nonprofit educational production company, to the NSO student facilitators focusing on alcohol and sexual assault awareness. Dean of Students Programs: The Dean of Student Office offers BearAware, a brief online prevention program geared toward incoming students to learn about behavioral expectations and standards for students. The online program provides modules and learning checks regarding general behavioral expectations, the Student Code of Conduct as well as provides information regarding sexual misconduct, consent, and KU’s Sexual Misconduct Policy. Incoming students are invited to participate in this program as part of their orientation to the university. BearAware can be found at https://www.kutztown.edu/studentconduct or https://www3.kutztown.edu/bearaware.
