2023 Annual Security Report

2023 ANNUAL SECURITY REPORT 27 This annual spring display exposes students to the effects of violence and provides opportunity for a higher understanding of the effects of violence and the need for social responsibility. Active Shooter Training: KUPD offers Active Shooter training to current students and staff upon request. This training is designed to instill the survival mindset in participants and teach students and staff realistic strategies for dealing with an Active Shooter situation on campus. The training is offered multiple times per academic year in both classrooms and departments. Participants can expect to receive helpful tips to employ should a campus emergency warrant action. Safety Escorts: On-campus safety escorts are available for anyone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and can be requested by contacting Public Safety and Police Services via telephone (610) 683-4002. The blue light emergency phones located throughout campus may be also used to request an on-campus safety escort. When the request is received by the Communications Center, a security guard is dispatched to the on-campus location of the requester in order to provide a walking escort to another location on campus. Students are not driven from location to location. It’s On Us Student Chapter: It’s On Us is a nationwide campaign that invites everyone to play a role in ending sexual assault on college campuses. The Kutztown It’s On Us Chapter brings together KU students from various clubs, organizations, teams and residence halls to re-frame the conversation around sexual violence and encourage all students to pledge to be part of the solution. The It’s On Us Pledge recognizes that non-consensual sex is sexual assault. • identify situations in which sexual assault may occur. • intervene in situations where consent has not or cannot be given. • create an environment in which sexual assault is unacceptable and survivors are supported. Assault is Not an Accident Classroom Presentations: The Women’s Center staff provides educational presentations to classes on topics of relationship violence and sexual assault. Each year, there are some faculty members who include this presentation in first year seminars or health classes. These workshops include information on relationship violence, different types of abuse, stalking, harassment, sexual assault, rape, consent, victim blaming, rape culture, organizations associated with sexual assault awareness resources on campus and places to report and contact information for various individuals and places. Campus Advocacy Services Via SafeBerks: The KU Women’s Center works with a community partner, Safe Berks, to provide campus advocacy services, which are confidential. Services include review of all reporting options, accompaniment to the Berks County Courthouse to obtain a Protection Order, law enforcement interviews, and Title IX meetings/hearings and referrals to other Berks County support services and resources, as needed. The Women’s Center, LGBTQ+ Resource Center, It’s On Us Student Chapter and the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance also partner together throughout the academic year to provide a variety of online and printed resources, small group discussions, awareness campaigns, and education through short films and movies on topics of red flags of dating, healthy relationships, and supporting male and LGBTQ+ survivors. Emergency Phones: The Kutztown campus has a number of emergency phones located around campus buildings and parking lots. These “blue-light” emergency telephones allow the user to summon help by putting them directly in touch with the KUPD. Users can simply press the button and KUPD will be dialed automatically. A blue, flashing light will illuminate to help indicate the location of the caller and signal that immediate help is needed. Near, on, or within the buildings are red phones or yellow telephones that also can be used to contact a dispatcher. Any person may simply pick up the phone or press the red button to communicate with the dispatcher. Officers will respond directly or call other emergency services, such as the fire department or ambulance, if needed. Informational Correspondence: Kutztown publishes information on how to access the campus crime statistics and fire statistics and lists of important phone numbers regarding crime reporting, safety tips and victim assistance
